Application for an internship
We are happy to learn about your interest in an internship at our institute! The following overview will give you an idea of how to apply for an internship.
Student internship
There are a number of opportunities for students to do an internship at our institute, particularly if this pertains to their field of study. However, the number of applications far exceeds the available capacity. Due to the lack of time and space, we regret that we cannot always answer in the affirmative. The success of an application therefore also strongly depends on the applicant's commitment, as well, of course, on whether the potential supervisor is available.
To ensure that an internship at our institute is in accordance with your particular interests, please first acquaint yourself with the research carried out here via our homepage. The websites of the different departments and independent research groups will help you to decide which group's research complies best with your own area of interest.
Please then send a short letter of introduction to the leader of the research group of your choice (see "project groups" on the departments' sites or apply to one of the independent research groups). In this cover letter, please explain in detail your reasons for wishing to work in this particular group. In addition to the usual CV and references, please include an approximate timeframe in which you could carry out the requested internship.
Internship for (school) pupils
We are always delighted to receive inquires about internships for pupils. We consider it a pleasant duty to promote public interest in scientific research, particularly among young people. However, since we want and need to look after those visiting our institute accordingly, we can accept only a very limited number of internships annually. This means, regrettably, that the number of applications far exceeds the number of placements available.
If you seriously consider studying science and also having a real interest in neurobiology, then please proceed as outlined below. First of all, please use our homepage to familiarize yourself with the research in the departments and research groups. This will enable you to determine the group whose work interests you most. An internship should, after all, be in keeping with the applicant's own interests.
Once you have identified the group whose work interests you most, please contact the leader of the research department or independent research group in question. In a short introductory letter, please state the reasons for your application and, in particular, explain why you wish to be allocated to precisely this group. Remember to enclose your curriculum vitae, to provide a possible starting date for your internship and to state how long you intend to spend at the institute.
We are aware of the discrepancy between demand and supply in the field of internships, especially for pupils in the German 9th grade. We are therefore presently checking the possibility of providing an internship week within the framework of our students' and visitors' laboratory (MaxLab), to further supplement our range of courses for school pupils.
